I discovered LitRPG about 3 years ago. Since then I've read nearly everything I could find on Amazon, everything longer than 8 chapters on Royalroad and numerous personal and translation websites. With this as a background, I would rate this book in the top 5 series. I would say the that the first 3 books of Alterworld, The Gam3, Changes:New World, Way of The Shaman, Patch 17, and The Land of similar quality. The only thing really holding me back is saying that this is the first book, and there aren't any sequels yet.
There is a dark tone. Edward is a bit morally ambivalent in his pursuit of skills and knowledge. If you are only interested in lighter fare with good heroes, look elsewhere. But, there is actual danger and consequences, which is nice.
Well worth the high price.

Adventures of a Scribe eBook Michael Deyhim Reviews
The MC lives in a world governed by RPG like rules. At an early age he gains the desire to learn as much about the world as possible. He leaves home and takes up the deadly life of an adventurer.
Good book, I found many editing mistake that took me out of the story for a moment, but the story and character development more than make up for this. If I had one concern about the story, it is about how ready the MC is to kill people. There is at least one time where he kills a man just because he suspects the other might try to kill him, after making a deal to aid that man.
Wow, I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book. I have been reading a lot of litrpg lately, and while I enjoy it they tend to be poorly edited. This wasn't, it flowed well and had enjoyable character development. I also liked the concept of a world that wasn't a game, but had game qualities. In addition to format I loved the main character. It was refreshing to have a main character who was both competent and yet not the chosen one. Overall, this was a great book and I am waiting expectantly for the next book.
I gave it four stars, though it's more of three and a half. If the author had edited the entire book instead of just the first half or so, it would be a four.
Examples of poor editing in the second half Magnus and kobalds. Seriously, he keep writing Magnus instead of Magus, and it should be kobolds. He get it right in the first half of the book.
What keeps the book from getting five stars from me, is the simple fact that I find the system he's using incomplete. He's using a RPG system with Health Points, yet no talk about how much damage weapons do. I don't need a damage counter, yet in a world with health points and reduction of damage received, it would stand to reason that weapons would have a damage output.
Despite that and the slightly, okay huge, sociopathic tendencies of the main character (especially the inconsistency towards the end. Why would he care?), the book is really good. It's well written, if poorly edited, and surprisingly long. Unlike many indie authors, the book isn't using an extra large font, or large spacings. Even the tables are limited, which makes for a nice reading experience.
While litRPG in the sense of there being levels, skills and stats, the protagonist Edward is not a gamer nor the world as far as we know. The nature of the game is a mystery and one that has also drawn the interest of Edward. We follow him in his quest for understanding and search for power from his first steps at nine years old to rescuing his family from bad things and many typical game-like adventures in between.
The mystery is intriguing, the game elements decent although there is no planning ahead since even the inhabitants do not truly understand the game. So the plot has my interest, but the characters are flat and the interaction feel awkward. More importantly for me, Edward acts a bit inconsistent. One moment he is helpful and polite, the next he is a sociopath using the worst kind of blackmail to learn secret and having the gall to be surprised at their anger. I have never been a big fan of dark protagonists.
All in all, I have mixed feelings about the book. The mystery of the world has me intrigued, but without it, I would likely have given it two stars. I am curious enough though to see where things going and hence likely buying the 2nd part. Definitely not the best and not sure I would recomend it to others.
I was skeptical about this one due to the price, but I took a chance and really enjoyed it. be warned the book is short, especially for the price point, but well worth it for fans of LitRPG.
That said, there are more than a few editing errors throughout the book which is annoying. It is easier for me to overlook in lower priced books or from Unlimited, but with an editor listed and full price, really should be cleaner at publish.
I will hope for more, the story itself is fun, not really sure why the author decided to make the characters leave for their adventures at age 12... not sure that 12 year olds are as mature as the ones in the book, but still a fun read and it left off with me wanting to read more.
Book was terrific read. Read it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. Outstanding job by the author. Only suggestion would be to develop more thoroughly more than just the main character. The main character and his progression are terrific. And a little on the unforgiving dark side which was actually kind f nice in the "life isn't fair" and be good to those who are good and have no pity for those who would abuse you. This was actually relief to see an author make his main character's values more consistent with the struggle to survive than most books where the main characters are too forgiving.
Deyhim tells an interesting story in a competent fashion. My enjoyment of this book was marred by a few factors. First, it wasn't well edited and could use another copy editing pass (and some commas!) There were a number of wrong word choices and awkward sentences. Second, Ed, the protagonist, wasn't ever really challenged during the course of the story; there was no real sense of danger for him. Third, as Ed develops, it turns out he's a bit of an ass and a blackguard. He's not a particularly noble or heroic figure and is far too pragmatic to be truly sympathetic. Still, I'm likely to buy and read the next volume.
