Very slow to get going, not really interesting and the ending was very short. Characters names such as Coryston the eldest son was confusing to me. Was not a book to keep me up all night reading.
Lady Coryston is a strong willed, independent woman with very strict views regarding the traditional role of England's ruling class...she wants to preserve the traditional ways at all costs; an ironic position that would deny her the right to give voice to the opinions she so readily expresses. Her hypocritical stance results in family conflicts that can be humorous at times and maddening at other times, as readers are most certainly likely to take sides in this battle that compels us to reflect on our own positions regarding social stratification and the needs of our fellow man. I sided with the positions of the radical Lord Coryston, but by the end of the book Humphry convinced me to at least consider the merit of opposing arguments. A beautifully enlightening work that provokes introspection. If you love the works of Trollope, you'll enjoy Ward as well.
